It’s a letter from Benedict, giving them instructions to seek a Chalice that will help them locate the missing Jewel of Judgement. Cillian uses his machines to contact Queen Vialle and give her the note from Benedict to try to explain their absence. They decide that they should probably contact Fenric, although he probably won’t be friendly toward Alyssa and Slania after the assault on the Pattern.

Liam brings Fenric through to where he is, and they discuss their options. They try to use Liam’s Trump to contact the Other Liam, but the Trump doesn’t connect. Liam suggests that Fenric try to contact Alyssa, but Fenric tries to contact Cillian instead, but the effort causes him to pass out.

They return to the Valiant and continue to follow Benedict’s instructions.

As Cillian tries to rouse Alyssa, he sees her as a rotting corpse, who grabs his arm. Meanwhile, Captain Jack draws his gun on Slania and appears like a demon. She indicated that they have been gone for a week, and that in that time, the wall has grown and approximately 40% of the paths between Amber and Chaos are currently blocked. She wants to know why Cillian can’t be reached and learns that Martin and Dara are able to block Trump contact within their realm.

Fenric decides to take the Flying Dutchman to investigate the edge of the wall in reality. On the edge of the wall, there’s a visible divide where the water turns from blue to green and is 2 inches different in elevation. Fenric pushes through, and his connection with the pattern immediately fades. He decides to experiment and trumps Primus, whose connection with the Logrus is similarly distant.

As a storm begins to form, Fenric sets his course back to his reality, and uses all his might to manipulate probability and loses consciousness as they cross the wall.

Caine identifies the code as being a form of machine code, but isn’t able to tell more without context that Slania isn’t willing to provide. Caine asks her if she knows what Llewella is up to, and Slania denies knowing anything. Caine gives her a special trump which can reach him in times and places where he would not otherwise be available. As Slania takes the trump, she finds herself in front of Castle Amber.

Act 12, Scene 10: The Pattern Chamber

Liam has assembled Random, Fenric, Slania and Alyssa in the Pattern Chamber. Liam has prepared a special suit for Fenric and submits to a body search to ensure that his other self hasn’t hidden a weapon on his person. Liam starts walking the Pattern with Fenric behind him.

As he passes the first curve, Liam hears a voice in his head saying “Hello, brother. It’s been so long since we’ve been able to converse. I am Liam, Prince of Amber, the rightful master. You locked me away so many years ago. That bitch locked me away, but I did not die.” Liam sees a memory of Dierdre arguing with Fiona, saying that Liam’s temperament is unsuitable.

As he walks the pattern, Fenric suddenly transforms into a massive manticore, and struggles to remain within the lines of the pattern.

Liam continues to remember his early history, including psychic surgery being done on him by Fiona, unlocking his psychic potential at the cost of his physical vitality.

As he continues to walk, Fenric transforms into an enormous wolf.

As Liam continues to walk, he remembers his first pattern walk, as Fiona is watching him closely, and infusing his psychic bonds with the pattern itself.

Fenric turns into an aquatic creature from the black lagoon like creature.

Liam remembers his torture at the hands of Osric, being informed that there’s a pattern ward deep within the mind of Liam, beneath centuries of scar tissue. They decide to cut it. In the real world, Liam’s body is wracked with pain, and there are waves of psychic pain flowing from him which all of those present can feel.

Liam stops and begins to wobble. Fenric catches up with him and steadies Liam. Under psychic attack, Fenric lets go of Liam, who stumbles to his hands and knees. As Fenric helps him up, Liam takes a swing at Fenric, who restrains his arms and helps him to continue. After a struggle inside Liam’s head, Alyssa throws a power word at Liam and Random appears on the Pattern in front of Liam, grabs him by the throat and starts walking the Pattern backwards while pulling Liam.

Alyssa and Slania make contact with Liam and encounter Liams within Liam’s head. They make a decision about which one to destroy. As they kill it, Slania picks up a crossbow, and the shot goes wild, hitting Random. Guards descend upon Slania who doesn’t resist, but Alyssa escapes with Slania using Cillian’s trump.

As Liam reaches the center of the Pattern, he sees another version of himself grab the jewel of judgement from Random and teleport away. Random teleports to the infirmary as Liam tries to follow his double.

Liam tries to stabilize the shadow. Alyssa sees one of the horses touch the rift and disappear in black smoke.

Alyssa contacts Cillian and asks to be pulled through. Instead, he is pulled through and they end up in the rift. Fenric tries to trump the Dutchman, but the connection fails. Brass parts appear in his hands, and he starts working as a workshop appears around him. He feels like he can fix the world.

Alyssa finds herself within a machine, as her thoughts take on a mechanical nature. He wants her to rebuild the world. Cillian describes his home, but the machine has insufficient memory. He starts building it bigger, but needs a power source. He lowers his trump barrier and creates a piece of solidified void as a power source, as a Logrus tendril grabs him. For a moment, he’s in contact with Primus’s mind. It only lasts a moment. As he installs the power source, there’s a massive flash of light and the Dutchman appears in the distance.

The ships hail each other heave to. Alyssa begins communicating through the machine, and Cillian starts trying to make a new body for her out of brass and cogs. Slania goes below deck, which reminds her of one of her submarines, but with parts made out of steampunk brass. She works the controls, telling it to surface. After being shown to a swanky waiting room, Alyssa unsuccessfully tries to contact Fenric and then Fiona.
Eventually, they are summoned to a “royal” audience. The throne room looks like a knock-off of the Amber throne room. Dara is announced as “Her Highness, Lady Dara of Hendrake”. After passive aggressive small talk, Dara begins to describe a survey she and Martin had done of the shadows between the Pattern and Chaos, and a device they found in a shadow equidistant from Amber’s Pattern, Chaos and Corwin’s Pattern.

Act 10, Scene 3: Amber City

Primus shapeshifts to look like somebody else and they travel to the Guild. Liam wants to make sure that there was no psychic manipulation before his execution order is carried out. Liam and his posse head to the Guild and speak with the head of the guild, a man called Andersynth. He is very helpful. The order was given by a man claiming to be a member of the Amber military, looking for a secret assassination of a Chaos ambassador. They believed him because he had an Auditory Seal and was a shapeshifter who didn’t set off their Chaosite detector.
They come to an understanding and Liam takes some of the men to prison to await execution.

Martin appears and beings asking questions about repairing trump machinery. He is shown a sketch of a complicated machine made of brass and gears. Elements of it remind him of his lost home, but it still looks far older and alien. Cillian tries to make a deal, but Martin is playing good cop to Dara’s theoretical bad cop. Cillian leaves with a box full of parts and instructions to wait for Martin to contact him. Cillian leaves him with a warning that his plan feels slapdash and may collapse if put under enough pressure. Cillian heads back to his home shadow.

Act 10, Scene 5: Audience with Dara

Dara explains that the devices are powered by negantium, which is a rare mineral which can be found in the auditory seals. Alyssa realizes that the her auditory seal is now missing its special qualities after having been in Dara’s possession.
They discourse on the rightness of Amber’s occupation of Chaos. Dara seeks to end the occupation entirely, but believes that Amber is unable to stop the war by itself and it’s only through their radical solution that peace can be maintained.
Alyssa and Slania leave to escort a caravan from Amber to Chaos that was trapped within Martin’s sphere of influence. They’re now back in contact with the Pattern.
As they make their way to Chaos, Slania gets a bad feeling, like they’re about to be ambushed. They circle the wagons while Slania goes ahead to investigate.
Alyssa and her caravan are suddenly surrounded by zerg, and an enormous, terribly scarred, humanoid figure comes to the front. He introduces himself as the gladiator. Alyssa receives a trump call from Cillian, says she’s under attack and leaves the connection open while Cillian trumps Fenric, who asks if he can bring Primus.

Act 9, Scene 2: A Locked Room Mystery

Alyssa, Cillian, Fenric, Primus and Slania are examining Kathryn’s body and the room where the body is. The device which killed her is roughly six feet long, and there is no evidence that it came from the room, so it’s likely that it hit her before she came through the trump. The lock on the door is very complicated. The candle has been burning for roughly 6 hours. The artifacts in the room suggest that this is Kathryn’s personal room, but the trump could’ve been made long before she moved in.

Act 9, Scene 3: O’er the Ramparts We Watched

Liam and Fiona are psychically battling the enemy attacking Amber from the psychic war room. The enemy is randomly rearranging parts of the city, like a living trump gone mad. The tower behind him begins to glow, eventually erupting into an expansive light, leaving a medieval fantasy village in its wake. He says that these people were destroyed in the Patternfall war, and he has just restored them. Slania realizes that she has no connection with the pattern. Martin informs her that there is no pattern and no logrus here, but refuses to elaborate, apart from telling Slania to thank Alyssa for him.

Primus says that the intelligence referred to itself as “Sand”, but he thinks it’s a metaphor.

They notice that the crown keeping him unconscious is part of his head, rather than adorning it. Fenric calls for a shang stick to force the bedridden figure to resume its true form. The true form is gallons of blood, but clearly not Baldur.

They spot a rat escaping from the room and Liam makes psychic contact with it, learning that the rat is actually a conjured construct. He orders it to bring them to its master. They follow it back to a tunnel out of the castle which appears to have been last used more than a day previously. The tunnel ends right outside the castle’s anti-teleportation field and there is no energy signal to follow.
Baldur contacts Primus, asking for help. Primus swears on his family name to keep him safe from the Amberites and smuggle him out. They agree to meet up at a tavern in town, and Fenric and Primus head to the tavern.
